The\u00a0most\u00a0French-American\u00a0woman shook up conventions and\u00a0rules\u00a0by\u00a0asserting total\u00a0freedom, as\u00a0much\u00a0on the artistic level as on the\u00a0community,\u00a0family,\u00a0sexual, and political level.<\/p>\n

While France prepares to open the doors of the Pantheon to her, making her the first Black woman to receive this national honor, the French cultural and diplomatic network is paying her tribute with the documentary Josephine Baker: The Story of an Awakening.<\/em> This\u00a0documentary\u00a0will\u00a0provide\u00a0a\u00a0better\u00a0understanding\u00a0of the complex relationships that\u00a0the first\u00a0African-American international star\u00a0had\u00a0with\u00a0the United States, as\u00a0well\u00a0as the\u00a0role\u00a0she\u00a0played\u00a0in the Civil Rights\u00a0struggle\u00a0alongside\u00a0Martin Luther King Jr.<\/p>\n

Synopsis:<\/strong><\/p>\n

World-renowned\u00a0performer, World\u00a0War\u00a0II\u00a0spy, and\u00a0activist\u00a0are a few of the titles used to describe Josephine Baker, one of the most successful African-American performers in French\u00a0history.\u00a0Viewers\u00a0of the film will witness how Baker went from being a poor Black girl\u00a0from\u00a0Missouri to\u00a0becoming\u00a0the Queen of Paris,\u00a0before\u00a0joining\u00a0the French Resistance and\u00a0finally\u00a0creating\u00a0her\u00a0dream\u00a0family, \u201cThe Rainbow\u00a0Tribe,\u201d by adopting 12 children from the four corners of the world.\u00a0

\nJosephine\u00a0Baker made\u00a0three\u00a0trips \u201cback home\u201d (in 1936, 1948, and 1951), and each time she experienced racist incidents despite her worldwide\u00a0fame.\u00a0Each difficult, tragic\u00a0experience helped to forge her convictions, gradually inspiring her to take part in the Civil Rights battle and to be the only woman to speak on-stage beside Martin Luther King Jr. during the famous March on Washington in 1963. From\u00a0then\u00a0on,\u00a0she\u00a0used\u00a0her\u00a0fame\u00a0to serve her political utopia until\u00a0the end of\u00a0her\u00a0life. This\u00a0is\u00a0the\u00a0journey\u00a0of a superstar’s awakening\u00a0from\u00a0the \u201cbanana\u00a0dancer\u201d to a\u00a0humanist\u00a0fighter.
