Echoing these two residencies, Villa Albertine Atlanta has invited Maria L. Kelly (Assistant Curator of Photography at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/high-museum-of-art\/\">High Museum of Art<\/a>) to select <a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/va\/events\/atlanta-photographers-nydia-blas-and-joshua-dudley-greer-in-residency-at-friche-la-belle-de-mai-in-marseille\/\">two Atlanta photographers to immerse themselves in Marseille: Nydia Blas and Joshua Dudley Greer<\/a>.<br>In <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/high-museum-of-art\/france-travel-blog-bridging-atlanta-and-marseille-through-photography-2961bc6c943d\">this article<\/a>, Maria shares her experience in Marseille and the exciting creative process underway with Nydia and Joshua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>On September 26, Maria L. Kelly will moderate a conversation with Joshua, Nydia, and Yohanne at <a href=\"https:\/\/theatlantaartfair.com\/\">Atlanta Art Fair<\/a> about their approaches to making work during the residencies and their experiences in both cities. In this panel discussion, the three photographers will consider their experiences making work in foreign cities and how the act of photographing can offer a nuanced understanding of a place. What translates in their methods of working, and what requires a reorienting of practice and self?<br>This unique cross-residency will culminate in the exhibition En Route: Views from Marseille and Atlanta, opening at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lafriche.org\/\">Friche la Belle de Mai<\/a> in March 2026, and later traveling to Atlanta in Fall 2026.<br><br><br>This project is part of the program City\/Cit\u00e9 Atlanta &amp; Marseille to explore how culture, ecology, urban policy, and communities can shape the way we imagine and build cities. His project, <em>Music is My Field<\/em>, set out to explore the rich musical traditions of the Southeast and Appalachia. It was in Atlanta that Imbert first connected with saxophonist Kebbi Williams and his collective, Reverence, during the city\u2019s <em>Music in the Park<\/em> festival.That encounter sparked a transatlantic artistic exchange. Imbert invited Williams to perform at the J.E.S.T. Festival in Marseille in November 2023, and later at the <em>Marseille Jazz des Cinq Continents<\/em> festival in July 2024. The collaboration deepened in November 2024, when Imbert came back to Atlanta. Alongside Marseille-based musicians T.I.E. (electronics) and Blanche Lafuente (drums), he traveled to Atlanta to co-create a new piece with Williams, Zacchaeus Paul, and Daniel Wytanis. Her preferred themes are urban peripheries and insularity in its multifaceted forms. She published Faux Bourgs (Le Bec en l\u2019air) in 2018, a compilation of her series on Marseille. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions: MUCEM (Marseille), Portrait(s) festival (Vichy), Fondation Schneider (Wattwiller), ImageSinguli\u00e8res festival (S\u00e8te), Clervaux-Cit\u00e9 de l\u2019image (Luxembourg), and is included in public and private collections (CNAP, BnF, Neuflize-OBC). She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Visual Culture at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She has completed artist residencies at Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts and The Center for Photography at Woodstock.<\/p>\n<p>Her work has been commissioned by <em>The New York Times<\/em>, <em>New York Magazine<\/em>, <em>The New Yorker<\/em>, <em>Time Magazine<\/em>, <em>Harper\u2019s Bazaar,<\/em>\u00a0and more. Blas uses photography, collage, video, and books to explore themes of sexuality, intimacy, and her lived experience as a girl, woman, and mother. Blas is widely recognized for <em>The Girls Who Spun Gold<\/em>, a collection of images that resulted from a Girl Empowerment Group she founded after observing a lack of space and community for teen girls of African descent in Ithaca, N.Y. Her first major monograph <em>Love You Came from Greatness<\/em>\u00a0(2025), is an exploration of one Ithaca-based Black family and its community across many generations.
