{"id":472713,"date":"2024-02-08T23:17:37","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T23:17:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/?post_type=app_event&#038;p=472713"},"modified":"2024-03-21T15:53:22","modified_gmt":"2024-03-21T15:53:22","slug":"portraits-in-red-by-wanjiru-kamuyu","status":"publish","type":"app_event","link":"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/va\/events\/portraits-in-red-by-wanjiru-kamuyu\/","title":{"rendered":"Portraits in Red\u00a0by Wanjiru Kamuyu\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Wanjiru Kamuy<\/strong>, a native Kenyan based in Paris will present her solo work,&nbsp;<em>Portraits in Red<\/em>, which investigates and explores the idea of the dominant standard of beauty and questions body image. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work draws on the dominance of the European and US beauty and fashion industries\u2019 capitalization and globalization of a narrow standard of beauty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born into a bi-cultural home (Kenyan-American) and having lived on three continents (Africa, North America and Europe),&nbsp;Wanjiru Kamuyu continues to be intrigued by each culture\u2019s general relationship to the notion of beauty and the provocation that arises around the image of the body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Wanjiru Kamuy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Wanjiru Kamuyu is associate artist with Theater L\u2019Onde (V\u00e9lizy, France) and a Live Feed artist with New York Live Arts (USA), whose career began in New York City. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a performer she has worked with Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Bill T. Jones, Molissa Fenley, Anita Gonzales, Okwui Okpokwasili, Nathan Trice, Dean Moss, Tania Isaac, and more, and in Europe with choreographers Robyn Orlin, Emmanuel Eggermont, Nathalie Pubellier, Ir\u00e8ne Tassembedo, Bartabas, Stefanie Batten Bland, writer-director Fran\u00e7oise D\u00f4, visual artist Jean-Paul Goude, and TV director Christian Faure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Kamuyu has performed in television and Broadway musicals, including <em>The Lion King<\/em> (Paris) and <em>FELA !<\/em> (UK and Equity European and US tours).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kamuyu founded the associate dance company, WKcollective, with creative production agency camin aktion (Montpellier, France). Her choreographic projects include tours in the US, Africa, Asia, and Europe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commissions include the musical <em>\u00c0 la recherch\u00e9 de Jos\u00e9phine<\/em>, director J\u00e9r\u00f4me Savary (Paris and International tours); <em>Love is in the hair<\/em>, director Jean Fran\u00e7ois Auguste (France tour); <em>Ma\u00eetre Harold<\/em>, director Hassan Kassi Kouyate (Paris); US esteemed dance departments (Mills College, University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Stephens College); artistic consulting for choreographer Bintou Dembele\u2019s ZH; choreographer assistant for Nathan Trice\u2019s <em>Their speech is silver<\/em>, <em>Their silence is gold<\/em>; storyteller Nathalie La Boucher\u2019s <em>La Chevauch\u00e9e du Gange<\/em>; and community engagement projects with New WORLD Theater (USA), choreographer Eun-mi Ahn\u2019s project 1:59 (Festival Paris Quartier d\u2019\u00c9t\u00e9), Euroculture and the National Center for Dance project Assembl\u00e9 (France).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While touring, she offers masterclasses and workshops to dance companies, universities, and community and dance centers. Kamuyu holds a MFA in Performance and Choreography) from Temple University (Philadelphia, PA).
