A dystopian dazzler from Godard, with Anna Karina, as von Braun\u2019s daughter, accompanying Caution in his investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/metrograph.com\/category\/jester-in-the-court-leaud\/\">Jester in the Court: Jean-Pierre L\u00e9aud&#8217;s Finest Follies<\/a><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metrograph.com\/film\/?vista_film_id=9999003608\">Made in USA<\/a><\/em> by Jean-Luc Godard \u2013 February 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A provincial French city plays Atlantic City and Anna Karina (in her last film with Godard) plays a trench-coated woman searching for her boyfriend, Richard, in JLG\u2019s cockeyed deconstruction of American noir tropes, its cast rounded out by Marianne Faithfull, and Jean-Pierre L\u00e9aud, the latter giving a masterclass in slapstick as a loitering tough guy with the unlikely sobriquet Donald Siegel (no relation to the Hollywood genre specialist of the same name). Very loosely based on Donald Westlake\u2019s The Jugger\u2014to the dismay of Westlake\u2014this Pop Art-styled pastiche embodies its director\u2019s conflicting love of American pop culture and hatred of America as a political entity. \u201cNot the celluloid holy grail, but it\u2019s close enough.\u201d\u2014J. Hoberman, The Village Voice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metrograph.com\/film\/?vista_film_id=9999003606\">The Death of Louis XIV<\/a><\/em> by Albert Serra \u2013 February 3 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a long-reigning star of French cinema, Jean-Pierre L\u00e9aud is the natural choice to play France\u2019s Sun King in the twilight of life. Serra\u2019s morbidly comic film is a deathbed vigil for Louis XIV, closely observing both the king\u2019s slow, wasting last days as he is consumed by gangrene in his candlelit bedchamber and the scrupulous observation of court ritual by his retinue of servants and doctors.  <em>The Death of Louis XIV<\/em> serves as a sumptuously photographed, comically perverse, and engrossingly macabre cinematic experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metrograph.com\/film\/?vista_film_id=9999000516\">Irma Vep<\/a><\/em> by Olivier Assayas \u2013 February 3 and 4<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maggie Cheung in the role she was literally born to play: Maggie Cheung. The Hong Kong actress stars in a remake of Louis Feuillade\u2019s 1915 serial <em>Les Vampires<\/em> directed by a New Wave has-been (Jean-Pierre L\u00e9aud), but then finds herself submerged in a strange world of flirtatious lesbians, bourgeois ex-radicals, Luc Besson admirers, and all-night raves, all the while becoming oddly in thrall to her form-fitting S\/M catsuit, which lures her out onto the rooftops of Paris. A meditation on global cinema at a moment of transition, a comedy about filmmaking and cultural crosstalk, and a movie so alive to the textures of contemporaneity that it hasn\u2019t aged a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metrograph.com\/film\/?vista_film_id=9999000047\">The Mother and the Whore<\/a><\/em> by Jean Eustache \u2013 February 10 and 11<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eustache\u2019s biggest claim to fame\u2014or, in some circles, notoriety\u2014is this mordantly funny, self-flagellating autobiographical epic of rapier-sharp dueling dialogue. L\u00e9aud is all dandyish flair as Alexandre, a hangdog layabout, who becomes involved in a three-way affair with two women: live-in lover Bernadette Lafont and morose nurse Fran\u00e7oise Lebrun. Beautiful people, ravishing landscapes, and quite a bit of ugly behavior add up to make one of the most cherished of French thrillers, where no amount of time in the water will serve to wash this quartet clean. \u201cIcily erotic!
