This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the birth of Ren\u00e9 Girard \u2014 philosopher, anthropologist, literary critic, and renowned Stanford French professor, who emigrated to the United States in 1947 from Avignon, France. On September 13th<\/sup>, 2023, we\u2019ll honor this anniversary and the return of his ashes to his native land with a special memorial concert in San Francisco.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the 40 \u201cimmortels\u201d of the prestigious Acad\u00e9mie Fran\u00e7aise, Girard was dubbed \u201cthe new Darwin of the human sciences.\u201d His fascinations were limitless, and he was particularly interested in the causes of conflict and violence and the role of imitation in human behavior, which formed his influential mimetic theory of desire.
