{"id":219374,"date":"2023-08-29T18:52:15","date_gmt":"2023-08-29T18:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/?post_type=app_event&#038;p=219374"},"modified":"2023-08-29T20:11:54","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T20:11:54","slug":"never-twenty-one-by-smail-kanoute","status":"publish","type":"app_event","link":"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/va\/events\/never-twenty-one-by-smail-kanoute\/","title":{"rendered":"NEVER TWENTY ONE by Sma\u00efl Kanout\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Never Twenty One<\/em> by Sma\u00efl Kanout\u00e9, Compagnie Vivons, infuses a variety of styles, from krump to wave, to convey the stories of victims of gun violence from New York to the favelas of Rio and the townships of Soweto.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement\u2019s #Never21 hashtag, French-Malian choreographer and dancer\u00a0<strong>Sma\u00efl Kanout\u00e9\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>deeply resonant piece pays tribute to young people of color who have lost their lives to gun violence all over the world before reaching the age of 21. Excerpts of powerful testimonies from victims\u2019 family members are transcribed on the dancers\u2019 bodies, combining dance and visual art. The dancers\u2019 movement draws on contemporary and intuitive dance,\u00a0<em>krump<\/em>, popping, and\u00a0<em>baile funk<\/em>\u00a0in recounting the stories of many broken lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sma\u00efl Kanout\u00e9<\/strong><em> graduated with a diploma in graphic design from the Ecole Nationale Sup\u00e9rieure des Arts D\u00e9coratifs in Paris. He is also a self-taught dancer who directs and produces short films, a number of which have been shown at the MAC in Lyon and at the MEP. <\/em><em>His short film\u00a0<\/em>S\u00f4 Ava<em>\u00a0was shown at New York\u2019s Summerstage on July 14, 2022.
